About this research

This work is our first step in contextualization research for Armenia. We moved to Armenia 1.5 years ago and did not find any local Effective altruism group or even thoughts on the local EA context. This work is a rather big internal drive to learn about our new home (Armenia) from the EA’s perspective.

Potential outcomes of our work

These are not goals that we fully achieved but rather work directions that might grow from our overview research.

  1. Identification of the most impactful cause areas and the most high-impact intervention opportunities in Armenia.
    1. Highlight additional perspective opportunities for local resources to be spent on.
    2. Identify Armenian comparative advantages and local opportunities for highly effective interventions.
    3. Identify the most impactful charities. Some countries may have regulatory or legal hurdles that prevent the flow of philanthropic capital in and out, limiting the ability of local charities to accept foreign funds and for local donors to give abroad. Identifying local, high-impact charities can thus increase the pie of philanthropic giving as well as increase the effectiveness of the marginal dollar in the country.
    4. Or otherwise, conclude that it is indeed significantly more effective to donate overseas. It is important to show one cares and is knowledgeable about local problems before making the claim one should focus on other geographies or cause areas.
  2. Identification of the most prospective career pathways in terms of Effective altruism for those who want to work in Armenia.
  3. Building a local EA community around identified directions. This research helps us a lot to start a talk with potential new members of the EA-Armenia community. Even if a person decides to work on a global problem it is always nice to have information about the local state of this cause area.
